Harkers Island Bridge Weight Limit Reduced Beginning Thursday, Oct. 4 Wednesday, October 03, 2012

RALEIGH — Starting Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8 a.m., the weight posting on the overflow bridge over the Straits on Island Road in Carteret County will be reduced to five tons. This is the only bridge leading onto Harkers Island.

NCDOT contractor Palmetto Gunite Construction Company Inc. is currently conducting preservation work on the overflow bridge and the swing span bridge onto Harkers Island. During the course of this preservation work, crews have identified portions of the structure that are in need of immediate repair.

The posting will remain in effect until bridge repairs can be completed.  The bridge will continue to remain in the one-lane traffic pattern that is already in place. NCDOT is coordinating with local entities affected by this posting to minimize its impact.
