WHEN:        Friday, September 21 at 11 a.m.

WHERE:    Construction staging area at the U.S. 70 Business/West Market Street bridge over the Neuse River in Smithfield

COMMENTS:     Representatives from NCDOT and D.H. Griffin Construction Co. will be available to discuss the closure and replacement of the U.S. 70 Business/West Market Street bridge over the Neuse River in downtown Smithfield.

Because the bridge is still open to traffic, this media availability will take place at the construction staging area on U.S. 70 Business East/West Market Street just before you cross the bridge.

The bridge, built in 1923, is being replaced with a five-lane bridge that also includes a six-foot wide pedestrian walkway on the north side and a 10-foot wide multiuse path on the south side to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 25, weather permitting, the bridge will be closed to traffic for approximately 240 days, or the equivalent of eight months. Several detour routes will be in place while the bridge is closed. A fact sheet, including a map of detour routes, is attached to this advisory.
