Triangle, the time has come to vote on I-40/440 project name Monday, August 13, 2012

RALEIGH – As the Triangle prepares for the major rebuild of I-40/440, about 370 people submitted creative names for the project -- names they will probably yell while they sit in traffic for three years. Most people wrote multiple suggestions.

A panel of N.C. Department of Transportation judges had the tough job of selecting the five finalists. We present them to you now. Drum roll, please…

Carmuda Triangle

Southern Discomfort

South-Wake Remake

Now, the public can vote for a favorite. Please, vote once. The deadline is Thursday at noon.

The winning project name will be announced Wednesday, Aug. 22, and used in all future references to the project. It will also be the website name that will provide information about project. The winner will be publicly announced and get major bragging rights.

The rebuild of 11 miles on I-40/440 from U.S. 1 in Cary to U.S. 64/264 in Raleigh will begin in the spring/summer of 2013 and last three years. The project will require lane closures, sometimes leaving open just two lanes of travel.  That section of interstate is 30 years old, and workers need to dig down at least two feet to remove and replace concrete and asphalt on the road, shoulders and ramps.

Although they did not make the final five, the following entries were clever enough to earn an honorable mention from NCDOT:

I-40; Duke-0

Tar Hell

40 Shades of Congestion

Lanes of Pain

Numb Buns

Constructipation – Waiting for traffic to get moving again

Y’all Crawl
