Bridge on Sam Newell Road in Mecklenburg County Anticipated to Open in Next Two Weeks Wednesday, August 08, 2012

Bridge over Irvins Creek to open before school starts; work will continue under lane closures

CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation expects to complete a $1.5 million project to replace the bridge on Sam Newell Road over Irvins Creek in Matthews the week of August 20. Crews with Blythe Construction are working to get the road open in advance of the start of the traditional school year to help traffic flow more efficiently at nearby Crown Point Elementary School.

During construction, crews could not continue installing a pipe without blasting through additional rock, which required more time. Engineers first planned to postpone opening Sam Newell Road until the end of September, but the contractor is accelerating work to get the road open more than a month sooner, finishing additional work under lane closures.

The bridge, built in 1945, is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands. Blythe Construction is building the new bridge with three lanes, including a center turn lane.

Currently, traffic is being detoured from Sam Newell Road to Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) to Margaret Wallace Road back to Sam Newell Road. When the bridge opens to traffic, the contractor will continue working under lane closures through Sept. 15. No lane closures or narrowing will be permitted from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to accommodate school traffic.  Landscaping and vegetation work will continue through March 2013.
