Triangle Expressway Trot II and Family Fun Day this Saturday Wednesday, July 18, 2012

RALEIGH — Run it before you ride it!  More than 400 people are expected to take part in the Family Fun Day and Triangle Expressway 5K Trot II this weekend to celebrate the upcoming opening of phase two of the Triangle Expressway.  The N.C. Turnpike Authority will host the events Saturday, July 21 from 7 to 10 a.m. All proceeds from the Trot will benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
The event begins at 7 a.m., with the 5K race starting at 8 a.m. The kid’s 100 yard dash will follow at 9 a.m. and is free of charge. Race participants may still register here or in person the day of the event beginning at 7 a.m.  The race registration fee is $35.
The community is invited to participate in this family-friendly event at no cost to get a sneak peek at the new toll road before it opens to traffic. Rock 96 will be providing entertainment and children can make friends with some of our area’s favorite mascots including N.C. State University’s Mr. and Mrs. Wuf, Muddy the Mudcat, the Blue Monster, Stormy and NCDOT’s Buddy Barrel and Connie Cone.  Kids can also enjoy jumpy castles, color with sidewalk chalk on the new toll road and explore vehicles on display.
The first phase of the Triangle Expressway, known as the Triangle Parkway, opened to traffic on Dec. 8, 2011.

Phase two, from N.C. 55 to U.S. 64, is scheduled to open Aug. 1, with tolling beginning Aug. 2. In January phase three, which connects the existing Triangle Expressway from U.S. 64 in Apex to N.C. 55 Bypass in Holly Springs, will open.
The NC Quick Pass transponders are available online or at the NC Quick Pass Customer Service Center at 200 Sorrell Grove Church Road, Suite A in Morrisville.
