Secretary Conti Announces “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” Nets 1,937 DWI Arrests Tuesday, July 17, 2012

RALEIGH — State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced today that state and local law enforcement officers cited 1,937 motorists for driving while impaired during the “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign, which ran June 29-July 9. A total of 63,485 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide.


“These numbers show how dedicated state and local law enforcement are to removing drunk drivers and other violators from our roads,” Conti said.


During the Governor’s Highway Safety Program campaign, officers statewide conducted 5,974 sobriety checkpoints and dedicated patrols. Counties with the highest number of DWI citations were Mecklenburg (107), Wake (106), Robeson (76) and Durham (76).


Officers also issued 5,005 safety belt and 822 child passenger safety violations, 19,369 speeding violations and 1,803 drug charges. In addition, they apprehended 943 fugitives from justice and recovered 92 stolen vehicles.
