Traffic Update: Winston Road Bridge in Lexington Damaged in Accident Tuesday, June 05, 2012

I-85 Business South reopens to traffic

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has reopened I-85 Business South in Lexington, a day after a truck pulling a bucket truck on a low-boy trailer hit the Winston Road (N.C. 8) bridge. Two of the six beams that support the bridge were damaged in the accident. Photos are available on the NCDOT Flickr page.

The bridge is three lanes wide – two travel lanes and a turn lane. NCDOT has closed the lane on the side where the damage occurred and shifted that traffic onto the turn lane. This pattern allows traffic to travel on the bridge safely in both directions until repairs are made.

A special bridge inspection group from Raleigh was called in to conduct an in-depth inspection of the damaged bridge and to determine what kind of long-term repairs are needed and how long it will take to make them. Crews were also making temporary repairs to the bridge.

Following the accident, NCDOT closed I-85 Business South in Lexington and set up a detour, but was able to reopen both lanes of the highway this afternoon.
