U.S. Coast Guard Recognizes Ferry Division for Hurricane Irene Contributions Friday, May 04, 2012


RALEIGH — The North Carolina Ferry Division has been recognized for Outstanding Humanitarian Response during Hurricane Irene by the U.S. Coast Guard. A special presentation was made by the USCG April 23 at the Mid Atlantic Waterways Conference in Norfolk, Va., hosted by the Passenger Vessel Association.

A plaque and signed letter of commendation were presented to NCDOT Ferry Deputy Director Jed Dixon by Capt. Anthony Popiel, USCG Commander, Sector North Carolina and Rear Admiral Kevin Cook, Deputy Commander, USCG Atlantic Area, for the ferry division’s service for a “job well done” before and after Hurricane Irene.

The commendation details the hurricane and the results of “widespread destruction” including the breaches on NC 12 cutting off vehicle connection to Hatteras Island from the mainland. The full letter is attached.
