Project will widen road, install area’s first diverging diamond interchange

RALEIGH — Construction will start Monday, April 16, on the Union Cross Road project in Kernersville. The $30.3 million project will widen 4.2 miles of the road from Sedge Garden Road north of I-40 to just south of U.S. 311, and install the area’s first diverging diamond interchange at I-40.

On Monday morning, crews with Larco Construction will begin clearing work at the intersection of Union Cross Road and U.S. 311 to make room for the new lanes. They will continue this process along Union Cross Road heading north until they reach Sedge Garden Road. The majority of Union Cross Road will be widened to two lanes in each direction, but at the I-40/Union Cross Road interchange, it will be widened to three lanes in each direction.

Crews will also start moving a 24-inch water line on I-40. They must make sure all utilities are safely relocated from the path of construction before they can begin widening the roadway.

Motorists traveling through the area may experience congestion. NCDOT encourages them to go slow, pay attention and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely. Final completion for the project is set for Nov. 15, 2015.

Currently, 25,000 vehicles travel along this 4.2-mile section of Union Cross Road daily, but that number is expected to rise to 41,000 vehicles a day by 2031. The improvements will prepare for and accommodate the future residential and commercial growth anticipated in the area.

In addition to the widening work, one of the key improvements is the construction of the diverging diamond at Union Cross Road/I-40 interchange. The DDI is unique, because it allows traffic moving in two directions to temporarily cross to the left side of the road. The DDI will provide drivers with easier access to I-40, and help eliminate the congestion and crashes that occur when vehicles back up on the ramps. NCDOT will hold a meeting on Thursday, April 26, at 5:30 p.m. to talk with citizens about the project. The goal is to help people understand what to expect throughout the three-year life of the project and give them an opportunity to ask questions to department staff. The meeting will be held at Glenn High School at 1600 Union Cross Road in Kernersville. NCDOT will send out a detailed media advisory next week.
