NCDOT to Close Bridge on Wilson Mills Road in Johnston County Monday Friday, March 9, 2012

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close the bridge on Wilson Mills Road over Poplar Branch near Smithfield beginning Monday, March 12 for 120 days.

The closure is necessary for crews with S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson to replace the bridge.

A signed detour will be in place for through traffic. Motorists on Wilson Mills Road will use Booker Dairy Road, Buffaloe Road, U.S. 70 and Turnage Road to travel around the construction site.

Since this bridge is on one of the detour routes for the U.S. 70 Business Neuse River Bridge replacement, it is scheduled to reopen two months before that bridge is closed for replacement.

The existing bridge was built in 1941 and is deemed structurally deficient. This does not mean the bridge is unsafe, but there are elements of the bridge that need to be monitored to maintain its structural integrity. The new bridge will meet current design standards.
