Week-Long Closure of Gorman Street ramp to I-40 East to begin Next Week Thursday, December 07, 2017

RALEIGH - Drivers who go from Hammond Road onto Interstate-40 East got an early present last week when the long-closed original ramp to the east lanes re-opened. That meant a change in the traffic pattern on Hammond Road at the exit so if you haven't been through there for a while, pay extra attention to the new light and traffic setups.

Next week it will be the ramp from Gorman Street to I-40 East that gets attention. It is the only ramp on the project that hasn't been rebuilt yet. That will change when the ramp is closed at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14. It has to open again by the following Thursday morning, as that is when holiday lane closure restrictions take effect.

Detour options for drivers depend on where they are coming from. They can head east on Tryon Road, and turn left on Lake Wheeler Road to get to I-40 East. Or go from Gorman Street to Avent Ferry Road, and then Centennial Parkway to Lake Wheeler Road, where they would turn right to get to the I-40 interchange.

With winter-like weather coming in through the weekend, crews won't be able to do any work that involves paving or lane striping so more shifting into the final pattern on the eastbound side is on hold for a bit. However, the entire stretch of the work zone already has the same number of travel lanes open as it did before the project started and that will be used by for traffic once it is completed.

One thing that can be done even in the cold temperatures is the removal of more of the concrete barriers around the project so there will be a bit more room for vehicles. There will also be some milling of asphalt to have it prepped for final paving, when it is warm enough.

A reminder that holiday break that starts Dec. 22 carries through until the night of Jan. 2, with no lane closures allowed during that time.
