Ramp From I-40 West to I-440 West Being Returned to Original Setup Wednesday, November 01, 2017

RALEIGH - Drivers who go from I-40 West to I-440 West may recall the brief sudden closing of one of the two ramp lanes a few weeks back. And that we re-opened the two lanes to do some better planning for when we had to close the left ramp lane for project work. Well that will happen this weekend (advance signs are already up). So look for the ramp to go to a single lane (the right lane) about 9 p.m. on Friday. The left lane is scheduled to be open by 5 a.m. on Monday, but the contractor is hoping it can finish the work in time to re-open it overnight on Saturday or earlier overnight Sunday (before 5 a.m.). Regardless, drivers need to use extra caution using the ramp while the work is going on.

Drivers on the eastbound side should see prep work under way through this weekend near the Gorman Street exit, getting that area ready for some final layer paving next week.

It is also next week (probably starting Tuesday night), that shifts into the final traffic pattern for the eastbound side gear up by the Hammond Road exit. Over the following few nights, the contractor hopes to take those shifts back to around the Gorman Street exit.

A reminder that with the smoother road surfaces going in, and new lanes opening up, the speed limit is still a work zone 60 mph. Most drivers are not obeying that (go 60 in either direction and count the vehicles that pass you). And that has the attention of the Highway Patrol, which is stepping up enforcement and handing out what are very expensive tickets (add $250 to the fine and court costs as it is in a work zone).

So please, for safety seasons, still pay extra attention in the work zone and SLOW DOWN.
