This Week at NCDOT: Airport Grants, Championship Signs and Panther Trains Friday, December 01, 2017

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Airport Grants

North Carolina airport passengers, pilots and businesses will soon benefit from 11 project improvements, boosting the aviation industry’s $31 billion contribution to the state’s economy. The state has allocated $4.7 million for safety and connectivity improvements to airports from Ashe County to Elizabethtown.

Some of these improvements include runway extensions, paving, new taxiway lighting and repairs to airport aprons where planes park or refuel.

“Airports are a very critical part of our transportation system in North Carolina,” said Bobby Walston, Division of Aviation director. “They provide the connectivity that we need not only in our state, but to other states in the nation, as well as global markets.”

College Championship Signs

North Carolina is well known for its college sports teams. To recognize colleges and universities that win a national championship, the N.C. Board of Transportation has approved a program that allows signage listing the school and team to be installed along NCDOT roadways.

The first signs to be installed will honor the University of North Carolina’s 2017 men’s basketball team.

Drivers will start seeing the signs next year along:

  • I-95;
  • I-85;
  • I-77; and
  • I-40

Schools will pay for the signs and requests must be approved by the Board of Transportation.
