This Week at NCDOT: Vehicle Theft Prevention and Aviation Career Education Camps Friday, July 14, 2017

RALEIGH, N.C. – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation.  The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Vehicle Theft Prevention

In 2015, more than 13,000 vehicles were reported stolen in North Carolina, and 1,287 arrests were made to recover 25 percent of those vehicles.  In that same year, the DMV License and Theft Bureau recovered 915 vehicles valued at $7.8 million.  For 2016, those numbers increased by seven percent to 984 recovered vehicles valued at $8.5 million.

The state’s most popular vehicles stolen were 1997 Honda Accords and full-size 2004 Ford pickup trucks.

“Be aware of your surroundings,” said DMV License and Theft Director Col. Steve Watkins.  “When you get out of your vehicle, make sure you take your keys and lock your door.”

There are several ways for drivers to help prevent vehicle theft.  Some include:

• Parking in well-lit areas;
• Locking all windows and doors when you park;
• Not leaving your vehicle unattended while it is running;
• Not leaving your keys in the your vehicle; and
• Always concealing your valuables.

More information about the License and Theft Bureau is available on the DMV website.

Aviation Career Education Camps

Students from around the state are learning about aviation-related job opportunities this summer at aviation career education camps.  The “ACE” camps are sponsored by the NCDOT Division of Aviation and are held for students in the third through twelfth grades.

Students learn about the theory of flight, aviation history, aircraft maintenance and new aviation technologies.

“Aviation is a very fascinating thing,” said Leesville Rd. High School Junior Ben Mann.  “I’m most interested in the engineering side.  It’s fascinating to see these giant airplanes taking off.”

Students also fly radio-controlled aircraft and work on aircraft model design projects.  The campers will also take field trips to aviation industry businesses.
