Multiple Closures Planned This Weekend as Crews Set Girders for New Wade Avenue Bridge Thursday, July 13, 2017

RALEIGH — A significant step in the replacement of the Wade Avenue ramp bridge over Capital Boulevard is expected to take place this weekend, weather permitting. The contractor is planning to set girders for the new bridge and have them in place by Monday morning.

For the safety of motorists and because the girders have to be transported to the site, all traffic will be removed from Capital Boulevard near Wade Avenue during this work, and a number of closures and detours will be in place.

Southbound Capital Boulevard will be closed at Wade Avenue from 9 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday. The same short detour that was used during last weekend’s closure will be in place again. It requires all vehicles to exit at Wade Avenue, cross over that road and get back on southbound Capital Boulevard using the existing on-ramp. Law enforcement will handle traffic control. Three other closures will be in place between midnight and 5 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Southbound Capital Boulevard will also be closed from Dortch Street, which is south of Wade Avenue, to Peace Street. A detour will send motorists down Dortch Street to West Street to Peace Street.

Wade Avenue will also be closed at Capital Boulevard during those hours. A detour will be in place so drivers can access Capital Boulevard.

Northbound Capital Boulevard will also be closed during these overnight times, with all traffic diverted onto Peace Street. At the bottom of the exit ramp loop, drivers who want to get to westbound Wade Avenue will be detoured to northbound Glenwood Avenue to get to Wade Avenue. To get back on northbound Capital Boulevard, vehicles will be directed east on Peace Street, then turn left at North Person Street, which leads to Wake Forest Road, which merges onto northbound Capital Boulevard.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs and slow down in the area.

The bridge replacement is part of a $36.9 million project that will also put a new bridge on Capital Boulevard over Peace Street. The Wade Avenue portion of the work is the initial phase of the project.

The Department of Transportation and the City of Raleigh are working together to ensure drivers are informed of potential traffic impacts.
