Overnight Girder Placement Continues on I-85 in Cabarrus County Thursday, July 21, 2016

CHARLOTTE – Contractor crews for the N.C. Department of Transportation will continue nighttime work to set bridge girders for the future U.S. 29/601 dual bridges over I-85 in Cabarrus County. This bridge work is part of the eight-mile widening project to expand I-85 through that corridor. Bridge girders are beams that help support the bridge deck.

Highway improvement projects like this one are currently underway across the state as part of Governor McCrory’s 25-Year Transportation Vision to enhance travel safety and to better connect North Carolinians to jobs, education, healthcare and recreation opportunities.

Crews will first close I-85 South at the U.S. 29/601 interchange (Exit 58) tonight, July 21, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday, July 22. During this time, southbound traffic will be directed to travel up the U.S. 29/601 interchange ramp, cross U.S. 29/601, then travel down the adjacent ramp to re-access I-85 South.

Next, crews will close I-85 North in the same location on Thursday, July 28, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday, July 29. The detour will require motorists to use the I-85 North ramps to and from U.S. 29/601 to re-access I-85 North.

The same detours were in place earlier this month when girder placement first began. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, use caution and be mindful of crews working alongside the highway when traveling through the area.

The widening project, I-3802A, is designed to improve mobility on I-85 and its interchanges within the project area. Once it is completed, there will be two additional general-purpose lanes in each direction on I-85 from north of N.C. 73 (Exit 55) to north of Lane Street (Exit 63). Interchange improvements are also planned for I-85 interchanges at U.S. 29/601, Dale Earnhardt Boulevard (Exit 60) and Lane Street.
