NCDOT Awards $1.4 Million Contract for Proactive Repairs on the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on N.C. 12 in Dare County - Work is scheduled to begin this fall Monday, July 22, 2013

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $1.4 million contract to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy for proactive repairs to supplemental supports on the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on N.C. 12 over the Oregon Inlet in Dare County. The project will begin this fall to avoid impacts to summer traffic.

Because of the large amount of sand erosion, called scour, that was occurring around several supports on the northern end of the bridge, NCDOT in 1989 and 1991 installed steel beams to provide additional support in the event these areas experience increased erosion again. The sections that are above water on nine of those beams have weathered over the years due to exposure to the elements, so the department is taking proactive steps to replace those sections to keep them in good condition. All work will be complete by February 2014.

Periodic lane closures will be in place on the bridge to allow crews to take away materials and bring in steel for the project. Either a flagger or portable traffic signal will be in place to direct traffic when a lane closure is in effect.

This is one of 29 contracts totaling $107.5 million awarded by NCDOT in June for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 9.1 percent, or $10.7 million, below NCDOT estimates.
