Public Meeting on Dec. 6 on Planned Improvements for Glenwood Avenue between I-540 and Duraleigh/Millbrook Roads Thursday, November 29, 2012

RALEIGH – A North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) public meeting is planned for Thursday, Dec. 6 on possible improvements for Glenwood Ave. (U.S. 70) in Raleigh between east of I-540 and west of the Duraleigh Road/West Millbrook Road intersection.

The Department is looking for ways to reduce overall congestion on Glenwood Avenue. The plans for this four-mile stretch of roadway are in the early stages, with alternatives being developed in part based on public input received at the meeting. Those alternatives are expected to be presented to the public in a second meeting next summer.

Among the ideas being considered are:

  • Widening Glenwood Avenue by adding travel lanes;
  • Providing additional turning lanes;
  • Evaluating access and turning-movement updates;
  • Optimizing traffic signals; and
  • Bicycle and pedestrian updates.

Six signalized intersections are on this section of the highway: Triangle Drive, Ebenezer Church Road, Pinecrest Road/Westborough Road, Lynn Road, Hilburn Drive/Glenwood Forest Drive, and West Millbrook Road/Duraleigh Road.

It is expected that additional right of way and the relocation of businesses and homes will be required.

Thursday’s meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Raleigh Elks Lodge, 5538 Lead Mine Road, Raleigh. NCDOT representatives will display maps and be available to answer questions and receive comments. There will not be a formal presentation and individuals can stop by anytime during the meeting.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who want to participate in the meeting.  Anyone requiring special services should contact Steve Brown at  (919) 707-6014, or slbrown@ncdot.gov as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made.

For persons who do not speak English, or have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English, interpretive services will be available at the meeting upon request. For more information, please call 1-800-481-6494 prior to the meeting.
